Laynhapuy Homelands Diversity Day Celebration

Diversity Day will be a community celebration held in Yirrkala on Australia Day, bringing together people from across the Gove Peninsula and the Homelands during the wet season. This event acknowledges and celebrates the rich cultural diversity of our region, which includes Yolŋu people and residents from diverse backgrounds including India, the Philippines, South America, and New Zealand. The wet season brings many Homeland residents to stay in Yirrkala, making it an ideal time and place to host an inclusive event that strengthens community connections and promotes cultural understanding. Activities will showcase different traditions, food, music, and stories, creating a welcoming space for all cultures to share and learn from one another. The event also coincides with the anniversary of Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation's registration with ORIC, marking an important milestone in our governance journey. We aim to collaborate with local organisations such as Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation (RAC), NEAL, Gumatj, and Miwatj to deliver a successful and meaningful celebration for the whole community.
