This tool is recognises that communities and cultural environments change.

It introduces a simplified version of 'Community Mapping' as a way to help you revisit features of your local community, to assist in planning new, relevant events and programs for your Australia Day celebrations.

About this tool

This tool is recognises that communities and cultural environments change. It is designed to:

  • help Australia Day organisers revisit and examine their ideas and knowledge about their local community
  • suggest ways to achieve social inclusion, respect for, and recognition of, cultural diversity
  • help achieve stronger community involvement in Australia Day events.

Why use this tool?

Communities change and transform
We live in communities which are continually evolving, just as we live in a country which is in a continual state of change and modification. Whether it's the economic, cultural, social or environmental landscape, a look at snapshots from the past can show us just how things have changed.

You and your Australia Day organising team may find that your local community is rich with examples of the way communities change and transform.

While this tool has been developed with local communities in mind, some components may not be appropriate for smaller or remote communities. Select the components of the tool what that are most meaningful for your local community. The main objective is to take a fresh look at your local community (with specific objectives in mind).

Young People

This section of the Australia Day Toolkit also includes the Attracting and Engaging Young People tool. This tool provides information on how to engage young people in a relevant way, and suggests tailored events that may attract young people in your community.

Inclusive Events

This section of the Australia Day Toolkit also includes the Inclusive Events tool. It aims to provide hints, tips and ideas for ensuring your events cater for Australians from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This tool may provide you with some simple ideas for growing the appeal of your events.
