About the Australia Day Council of South Australia

The Australia Day Council in South Australia had its origins in 1954 when the then Premier of South Australia, Sir Thomas Playford and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr M R O'Halloran, addressed a meeting called to consider a proposal for the formal recognition of Australia Day.

A committee comprising prominent business leaders was formed under the Chairmanship of Mr T C Eastick, with ongoing support from both the Premier and Leader of the Opposition.

Meetings continued to be held on a regular basis, with support of both the Premier and Leader of the Opposition.

In 1981 the Committee appointed a full time Executive Director, subject to support from the Premier and the Government for the provision of accommodation and secretarial services. This arrangement was agreed to by the Government of the day.

In the same year, the National Australia Day Council advised that it could not provide support to a State Committee and the Committee consulted with government and after review by the Premier's Department and Crown Solicitor, an incorporated body was established under the Associations Incorporation Act, as a private organisation with Government support.
