It's Brisbane's quirkiest Australia Day event and in 2016 the Annual Cockroach Races at Story Bridge Hotel celebrate 35 years!
The fun-filled day includes great food stalls and cold drinks, live music, entertainment, prizes and more, as well as a 14-race program featuring the finest creepy-crawly athletes.
Story Bridge Hotel takes over the side street and neighbouring block for this huge street party, all directly beneath Brisbane's landmark bridge.
This family-friendly event attracts up to 2,000 attendees each year, guaranteeing a fantastic atmosphere! The races take place on a specially designed circular arena. The roaches are released from the "gate" in the middle of the track, and the first three over the line are declared winners. (NO flying will be tolerated - let your cockroach know!)
Entry to the Cockroach Races is simply a gold coin, which is donated to charity. Guests can also "purchase" a roach to enter in a race for $5.
The last race is scheduled for approximately 4.30pm and guests can continue the celebrations into the evening at the Hotel.
So come along and enjoy fantastic Australia Day entertainment at Story Bridge Hotel! And start working on creative cockroach names now, as the best one is immortalised in the Hall of Fame each year.
