Born in Ballarat in 1937.
John played 193 games for Essendon Football Club between 1957 and 1967, including two premierships in 1962 and 1965. He won the Best and fairest in 1961, 1965 and 1967.

He was West Torrens,Adelaide Captain and Coach from 1968 - 70.
John was a teacher at Essendon Grammar School and Pulteney Grammar School between 1961 and 1982.
John joined Collingwood Football Club in 1982 and worked as Football Manager, marketing manager and Membership Manager until 1999.
John joined Fitzroy Football Club as CEO between 1994 and 1996, and returned to Collingwood in 1997.
Rotary: Collingwood Club President 1990, Assistant Governor 1991, 2001 and 2002.
