While studying law at Adelaide University, Samela was appointed co-editor of the university newspaper On Dit. She was awarded the Rupert Murdoch “scholarship” – which was a job as a journalist on The News: Thus she became the first female reporter.

She went on to be first woman on Edinburgh’s Evening News after several years at AAP Reuter on Fleet Street in London. Samela returned to Adelaide in 1980 where she freelanced for arts magazines and The Australian and edited a monthly magazine called Mary’s Own before taking full-time employment at The Advertiser in 1985. She remains there as a senior writer.
